Derek Vincent Smith, who you might know as Pretty Lights, has released his new studio album, A Color Map of the Sun, on 8 Minutes 20 Seconds Records! Having given away all his previous studio albums as free downloads, Pretty Lights has done the same for fans with his latest work, as well as making available purchasable copies on CD, vinyl, and digital format!

The electro soul hip-hop producer Pretty Lights has been defying genre in the electronic music scene since his emergence in 2006, sampling live musicians and vocalists from different genres, chopping and screwing the classic sounds of the blues and soul, and infusing it with his own style of electronica with a hip-hop twist, creating a new sound that is unique and distinctly his own.

Pretty Lights spent the last year working on A Color Map of the Sun, recording live music and vocals of different genres and time periods from over the last century, pressing it into vinyl format that took over 50 full LPs, and eventually using a custom analog modular synthesizer, resulting in the album A Color Map of the Sun. The second disc of the album, Studio Sessions From A Color Map of the Sun, features Pretty Lights’ favorite recordings from the vinyls used in production of the album.

The first big single off the album, Around The Block featuring Talib Kwali, is already topping charts and playlists and will be making a national television debut on the Conan show July 17. Other collaborations on the album include So Bright with rapper Eligh, and work with musicians Eric Krasno, the Harlem Gospel ChoirBen Jaffe“Uncle” Lionel Batiste, and Adam Deitch.

Our personal picks off the album are the tracks Let’s Get Busy and Where I’m Trying To Go, but the whole album will take you on a journey through time and sound, and it’s really worth checking out.

Have a look at the making of the album documentary below, and download A Color Map of the Sun for free, courtesy of Pretty Lights himself! Enjoy!
