After the release of several hot new records on some of the biggest tech house/techno labels over the last few months, and yet another crazy and successful year at WMC with parties like Get Wet at the Surfcomber pool and not one but two headlining gigs at his Space Miami residency, we are proud to see the release of a new album from one of New York City’s (and one of the world’s) most beloved underground legends, Boris, with Believe In Me on NYC’s leading underground label Nervous Records!
The first disc of Believe In Me is composed entirely of Boris’ own original mixes and edits, including some previously unreleased material that we have been waiting a long time for! The first two tracks are the Boris edits of Didier Largemain’s Pumping Beats and Sydney Charles’ Big Badda Boom, which were both featured early last year on Boris’ unforgettable Get Wet 2012 podcast. Previously released original mixes like the techno bangers 2Me and Control off of his recent EP on the Octopus label make the cut, as well as the chart-topping SCI+TEC jam Foul Beats. One of Boris’ most anticipated releases also makes it’s official appearance, the collaboration with Chus called Soul Of A DJ, which is due to be released sometime soon on Mark Knight’s Toolroom Records label. Tracks like For You from the recent Dreams EP, the collab with Oscar L called Begin, and several other originals also make it into the first 13 track mix of Believe In Me. Throughout the mix, Boris includes personal touches and samples that you can catch in his live sets, most notably the classic acapella of Fierce Ruling Diva’s classic track You Gotta Believe, which has not only been a staple in sets, but has also become the signature motto and anthem, for Boris!
The second mix on Believe In Me is composed entirely of tech house and techno bombs from other well-known underground producers and DJs, like Marco Bailey, Gary Beck, Chus, Peter Bailey, and Richie Santana, to name a few. Richie Santana’s If You Came To Party is a groovy peak time banger that we’ve been hearing in Boris’ more recent sets, and the repeating vocal over the fading yet always present percussive sound has already proven to drive the dance floor wild. Tony Dee’s The Queen is another ID we’ve been hearing Boris play a lot lately, and we were personally excited to here it on the album, as the repeating, funky chord stabs and on-and-off percussion have made this track a dance floor destructor. Peter Bailey’s Jungle Kisses is a funky track with a pumping bass-line and darker vibe that you can expect to hear late at night, creeping through the speakers of your favorite after hour club. As with the first mix, Boris spices it up with samples and sounds, from the haunting vocals and dark riffs of Foul Beats to the more uplifting sound of the bells from Funky Bells.
Both mixes, although somewhat similar in sound, give off different vibes, reminding us of Boris’ previous album before Believe In Me with Believe II, which was broken down into a 3am mix and the darker (though better peak time set) 5am mix, also available on Nervous Records. To hear Boris’ new album will surely give you a taste of what you can expect to hear live, but you really need to experience it to believe it, as Boris always bring out one of the hottest house music loving crowds that when mixed with the music, creates undeniably the best party in town.
