SCI+TEC Presents The Junkies & Shaded @ Marquee NYC Recap

Last weekend, House4DJ had the chance to attend a special event at Marquee New York City: the return of the SCI+TEC label to the city that never sleeps! Following up from SCI+TEC head honcho Dubfire’s gig at Marquee (also the grand opening party), this event was headlined by the dynamic Canadian duo The Junkies and California native SHADED, formerly from the duo SHDWPLAY. We were in for what would surely be a night of some of the finest techno/tech house at one of NYC’s most exclusive nightclubs, and we weren’t let down!

Gino Santos

Setting the mood for the evening was NYC’s DJ Gino Santos, who had the crowd grooving and moving. After dropping the acapella to the classic track Wish You Were Here by John Creamer & Stephane K, the crowd erupted on the dance floor. It’s without question that Marquee has one of the most diverse and attractive crowds that New York City has to offer. Whether it’s the beautiful models, men in business suits, or club-goers and house heads like us, everyone comes together at Marquee for the love of the music. Finishing his set with the more recent SCI+TEC bomb Jack Tha Box by Whyt Noyz, the stage was set for our first label representative, SHADED!

SHADED

As soon as the young California producer took over the booth, the party was brought to a different level. The phenomenal Funktion-One sound system was completely turned up and it blew our socks off! Dropping heavy bass and bombs throughout his set, SHADED brought us nothing but fire. Opening his set with Love Bug, an original track off his recent This Is This EP as well as Dubfire’s SCI+TEC compilation A Transmission, completely demolished the dance floor. There was more space on the dance floor for this party because the VIP section was confined to the perimeter and mezzanine, rather than throughout the main floor as usual. This was a great touch for the night’s music, as it gave us all more room to dance, and circles even formed on the floor for dance battling. Other SCI+TEC originals like Be My Binge made it into the mix, and after an almost two hour mind-blowing set, the crowd was ready for the night’s headliner duo!

The Junkies

The Canadian boys Vince Val of The Junkies completely obliterated Marquee with techno/tech house bombs. After missing their last big NYC gig, and catching only one of the duo spinning at the Shelborne during this year’s WMC, we were very excited to catch the duo back in town at one of NYC’s biggest nightlife hotspots! A lot of IDs were played throughout the set, and we didn’t catch any of the original mixes we are familiar with (check out TucoGive It All, and Werq This), but that is one of the best parts of listening to a techno/tech house live set: you never know what you are going to get, but you know it’s going to be good. Although The Junkies have been spinning and producing for some time, their emergence from their roots in the underground world of house and on to big venues like Marquee’s main stage is a huge leap, and this extremely talented duo will only keep blowing up!

Dancers

It’s worth mentioning that the vibe at Marquee is always amazingly positive, and they really pull it off as a venue dedicated to the music and crowd; with such a versatile line-up of artists every month, with some of the world’s biggest superstars like David Guetta to underground kings like Dubfire, there is no question that Marquee caters to the fans by giving them a little of everything. Hospitality is also the key at Marquee; from your entrance to making it out on the dance floor, every staff member makes you feel special and is courteous, happy, and helpful. A nice touch we noticed on this particular evening was how people celebrating birthdays were given a special moment by the staff and dancers, who all came out with birthday cake and lit-up personalized billboards saying Happy Birthday. Although someone like Tiesto might be in the booth, the club-goers and fans are really the stars of Marquee. If you are in the New York City area, make sure to check it out!
