House4DJ recently had to chance to check out Music On with techno legend Marco Carola at Marquee New York, a 9 week residency that’s been taking place every Friday since October 25! Featuring support from some of the biggest names in the underground scene (Nic Fanciulli, Stacey Pullen, Joseph Capriati, to name a few), this particular night we saw New York City’s own Sleepy & Boo open for the Music On head honcho Marco Carola. We had great expectations for what could possibly be in store at one of NYC’s greatest nightlife destinations, but we weren’t prepared for what was in store – Marquee pulled out all the stops, making Music On one of the most memorable occasions we’ve seen there to date!
Kicking it off was NYC based duo Sleepy & Boo, who are also the folks behind Basic, the group responsible for bringing some of the biggest names in house music and techno to the Big Apple, and furthermore, to Marquee’s Friday night party series, dedicated to the underground side of house! It should be noted that Friday nights at Marquee are always done properly – despite being a nightclub highly regarded for it’s VIP experience chock full of celebrity appearances and bottle service, the Friday night parties are all about the music. Although you’ll still see a fair share of models and business suits, it doesn’t stop anyone from getting down on the dance floor! Holding true to us house music and techno faithfuls, Marquee remains dark but is well-equipped with state-of-the-art lasers and lights, and the phenomenal Funktion-One sound system will blow the minds of even the biggest house music connoisseurs (the Funktion-One monitor in the DJ booth was even designed by techno pioneer Richie Hawtin). Sleepy & Boo had the crowd moving and grooving on the dance floor, with a set of deep, dark techno. We were excited to hear the fan favorite acapella of John Creamer & Stephane K’s Forget The World, as well as New York native Jean Pierre’s recent Desolat bomb Who U Mad At?, right before handing the stage over to the night’s headliner, Marco Carola.
Taking over the decks around 1am, we were instantly blown away by the sounds of Marco Carola. Playing an incredible set of banging techno unlike any other, Carola hit us with serious bombs (and almost all IDs, at that), top-notch mixing, and various production techniques that were nothing short of genius. Vocal tracks were sparse, but it didn’t matter – the beats being dropped and the constant switch-up of style and sound kept it fresh, and whenever a vocal sample was dropped, it was something classic and brief, just enough to tease us and work the dance floor up. There is no question as to why Marco Carola is dubbed the “global ambassador of techno” – hailing from his hometown of Napoli, Italy, and after his recurring summer long Music On residency at Amnesia in Ibiza, to be able to experience a two month long Music On residency with the man himself in one of the biggest dance music capital’s of the United States, where we might have only typically seen him once or twice a year, is a phenomenon that simply can not be missed!
As if the music wasn’t enough to blow us away, the love shown towards Music On at Marquee was one of the highlights of the overall experience. LED screens around the venue read Music On for most of the night’s entirety, with a switch-up to Marco Carola every so often. Stickers of the Music On logo were given out to fans and could be found stuck everywhere from the bathroom walls to the bar counters, and baseball caps reading the same were proudly sported by some of the nightclub’s hottest denizens. LED screens hanging from the ceiling, surrounding Marquee’s notorious elevating disco ball, also showed off rotating Music On logos throughout the night. With all that said and done, the message the nightclub was sending was clear – Music On and Marco Carola had found another rightful home at Marquee!
There are only three weeks left to catch Marco Carola and Music On at Marquee New York before the residency ends, and although this article may touch some of the bases, it’s something you really need to see, hear, and experience for yourself. If you are in the New York City area, make sure to check it out! Ticket links for the last three nights can be found below. And remember…
It’s all about the music!
