House4DJ recently had the chance to catch a very special event at New York City’s mega club, Pacha! Making his return to his hometown of NYC and headlining the big room was house legend Dennis Ferrer, who had the house music faithful moving on the dance floor like never before!
Opening up for the Objektivity head honcho was Nasser Baker, a young upcoming talent from New Jersey who kept it deep and soulful, and played a proper opening set. Pacha NYC also set up their rooms a little differently on this night, turning the upper level (an open terrace overlooking the main floor) into a stand alone room called the Funky Room, sound proofing it and setting it up as a whole new experience and dance floor. Another upcoming talent out of New York City, Les Carbonell, kept the crowd moving in the Funky Room with his infusion of deep, soul, and tech house (listen to the set below)!
When Dennis Ferrer took to the booth on the main floor, the crowd reacted just the way we had hoped: they screamed and danced like mad, and continued to do so for the whole night. It’s no question that with the evolution of the dance music scene, the crowds have evolved as well. A lot of parties and clubs these days have people standing around video taping and not really moving to the music, something that a legend like Dennis Ferrer had to deal with first hand last year at Mansion in Miami where he was forced to get off the decks because his music wasn’t “commercial” enough. There were no problems for Dennis Ferrer at Pacha NYC, where house heads like us moved non-stop and cell phone use was kept to a minimum – we could have listened to Dennis spin for another few hours even, as his just shy of 4 hours set was only a tease! In fact, it’s worth mentioning because the vibe on the main floor was so awesome and the energy so great that it’s one of the best underground parties we have ever seen at Pacha.
Dennis Ferrer kept us moving to his deep, soulful, and techy beats all nights. A true master of his craft, we were teased briefly by samples of some of his classic tracks, like his collab with Jerome Sydenham called Sandcastles and Touched The Sky with Mia Tuttavilla, and it left the crowd going wild and wanting more. Dennis also dropped some classic sounds like Roland Clark’s vocals from the DJ Le Roi’s I Get Deep and Plastikman’s Spastik, which brought the crowd’s energy to a whole new level. We also heard Dennis’ forthcoming track off Defected Records called Mind Ur Step, a deep soulful track featuring amazing vocals from Janelle Kroll (listen below).
Overall, catching Dennis Ferrer at Pacha NYC was a breath of fresh air, and it really brought us back to the roots of the underground with the vibe and sounds of some really good house music. We can’t wait to experience this again, especially at such a landmark nightclub like Pacha! If Dennis Ferrer is in your area, make sure to check him out if you haven’t yet – and for those who have, well you already know!
