Exclusive interview with Qulinez

Sweden continues to produce new talented producers, and already has several of the biggest names in the genre. To mention giants like Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, Alesso, Eric Prydz and Dada Life, the country has now been given another name to put on your lips – Qulinez – who today released their debut single ‘Troll‘ via Steve Angello’s Size Records.

Childhood friends Alexander Lager and Johannes Gustafsson have been producing tracks together since early 2006. A year ago, the duo started ‘Qulinez’, and since then, the DJ career has pointed straight up for the Swedes. But how did it all begin? ‘’We sent our forthcoming debut single ‘Troll‘ to Steve Angello. It took about a month before we got the answer that he wanted to release it on Size Records, something we were overjoyed to hear. I tried to call Johannes to tell him the great news, but as always, he didn’t answer. Finally, I took my car and knocked on his door and the rest is just full of celebrating’’, says 24-year-old Lager to House4DJ.

The duo who currently reside in Varberg, Sweden, has received lots of positive feedback and support from several of the biggest names in House music since Sebastian Ingrosso dropped the club banger during a gig at Club Glow in Washington DC on November 2011.

How would you describe your sound and the way you’re producing?

Qulinez: “We have tried to find our own sound that characterizes us. You should be able to hear that it’s Qulinez who’ve made the tracks we release. We sit in the studio almost every day and work on new tracks. I would say that we’re producing quite quickly, and always have a lot of ideas“, Gustafsson, 26, explains.

There is no doubt that co-operation is important when working as a duo. Qulinez is not the first duo to join Size, however, after previously joining among Third Party and AN21 & Max Vangeli:

Qulinez: “The best thing about being a duo is that you can come up with different ideas and that the co-operation is working well. We are also best friends outside of the music which makes it even better. We would say that it is an advantage to be a duo because you support each other a lot which leads to positive results

Who has been your biggest inspirations since you began, and if you could choose to work with three different producers, who would they be?

Qulinez: Tiësto has probably been an idol for most of the producers in this scene, while Swedish House Mafia has become a huge inspiration to especially all Swedish DJ’s. We would have loved to worked with producers such as Steve Angello, Skrillex and Tiësto.

Size debuted ‘Troll’ as one of the tracks played by Swedish House Mafia at their legendary show at the world famous Madison Square Garden in New York. Tell us how this huge club banger came about.

Qulinez: Basically, we sat down with Fruity Loops and wanted to create a track that could truly destroy a club. We tried to simultaneously come up with aunique sound and something to really push. ‘Troll’ was born – a name we thought was short and that settles on the head.

Which are your top 5 tracks at the moment?

  1. Qulinez – Troll
  2. Nicky Romero – Toulouse
  3. Nari & Milani – Atom
  4. Skrillex & The Doors – Breakn’ A Sweat
  5. Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso – Eclipse

Which are the three best House tracks ever made?

  1. Swedish House Mafia – One
  2. Daft Punk – One More Time
  3. Tiësto – Traffic

According to themselves, the biggest thing that has happened to Qulinez in the music industry to date is when they were signed to Size, and with the release of today’s single, the plans for the new year is very much up and running. At the same time, they’re not idle in the studio:

Qulinez:Our plans are to travel around on tour as much as possible, but unfortunately, we have no scheduled festivals or anything yet, but hopefully they pop up later. We also have a couple of tracks in the pipeline after ‘Troll’, but so far we cannot say too much as nothing is yet confirmed.

What can we expect from a Qulinez set?

Qulinez:Ha ha, you can expect good heat with lots of partying. We’re not playing the mildest tracks, and we want the public to have an experience when they hear us live. Our aim is that they should be very tired when the show ends.

Qulinez, or Koo-lajns as it’s pronounced, are two Swedish talents on the rise, which by today’s release shows their amazing production skills and will without any doubt take dance music by storm in 2012. A contagious melodious build up combined with a nice breakdown followed by the fabulous and hard dirty Dutch bass drop that grows and grows until it explodes and publishes a special sound signed Alexander Lager and Johannes Gustafsson, ‘Troll’ is just the beginning of a bright future for the Swedes.
